Supporting your natural stress defence to regain balance
Stress in itself is not always a bad thing. Some stress can have a positive influence, but too much stress for too long can be harmful to our mental and physical health.
In today’s modern world we’re busier than ever. A constant bombardment can cause an increase in the stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones switch on our ‘fight or flight’ mode and raise our blood pressure and blood sugar. These changes help us survive short periods of stress, but they hurt us when they continue for years.
Long term stressors create an over production of cortisol. This can leave you feeling burnt out and you may have difficulty returning to your former chilled out self. One in six adults in Britain experience depression, anxiety or problems relating to stress at any one time.
The problems associated with chronically elevated cortisol levels include:
Suppressed immunity
Hypertension
High blood sugar (hyperglycaemia)
Insulin resistance/ type II diabetes
Carbohydrate cravings
Metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes
Fat deposits on the face, neck, and belly
Reduced libido
Bone loss
Cognition dysfunction, anxiety, depression or low mood
You may be suffering from stress if you have the following symptoms:
Difficulty falling or staying asleep
Fatigue
Irritability
Concentration & memory decline
Muscle weakness and pain
Blood sugar imbalance
High need for stimulants such as caffeine, alcohol, sugar and cigarettes
Low Mood
Anxiety
Reoccurring infections
